Full Time
The Design Specialist will collaborate with cross-functional project teams across Berlin, Geneva, and regional offices to lead user experience initiatives and drive adoption of human-centered design practices. This role combines strategic design thinking with hands-on execution to create meaningful, user-focused solutions in a complex international environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design Strategy and Planning
- Define design challenges and identify opportunities for innovation
- Develop design strategies that align with organizational objectives
- Create comprehensive design workplans and coordinate timelines with project managers
- Advocate for inclusive and equitable design practices across all initiatives
User Research and Insights
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative research to understand user needs and behaviors
- Analyze and synthesize research findings to inform design decisions
- Translate complex user insights into actionable design recommendations
- Define metrics for measuring user experience and design impact
Prototyping and Iterative Design
- Develop prototypes ranging from low to high fidelity
- Design user flows, journeys, and interfaces that enhance user experience
- Test and iterate designs based on user feedback and usability testing
- Apply design best practices and maintain consistency across touchpoints
Stakeholder Engagement and Facilitation
- Design and facilitate co-creation workshops with users and stakeholders (in-person, online, and hybrid formats)
- Build consensus around user needs and design priorities
- Communicate design rationale clearly to non-design audiences
- Manage branding and visual identity considerations
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Documentation
- Conduct usability testing and post-implementation reviews
- Track design impact through defined metrics
- Document lessons learned and best practices
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes
Capacity Building
- Train and coach team members on human-centered design principles and methods
- Develop toolkits and resources to support sustainable design practices
- Promote design thinking as a core organizational capability
Required Qualifications
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Design, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field
Experience
- 5-10 years of relevant experience as a UX/UI designer working with a global user base
- 3+ years of experience designing and facilitating in-person, online, and hybrid co-creation workshops
- Proven track record of coordinating and leading successful design initiatives across multiple geographical locations
Essential Knowledge and Skills
- Strong UX/UI design skills with proficiency in user research, interaction design, and visual design
- Expertise in workshop design, facilitation, and building trust with diverse stakeholders
- Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex design concepts to non-design experts
- Demonstrated ability to navigate complex situations involving technical, cultural, and political considerations

Language Requirements
- Expert-level proficiency in spoken and written English (required)
- Intermediate knowledge of another UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian) is desirable but not mandatory
Desirable Qualifications
- Expertise in industry-standard UX software, particularly Figma
- Prior experience working with WHO or another UN agency
- Portfolio demonstrating range and depth of design projects
Work Environment
