Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Java Technical Lead to join a complex, high-impact EU project at the European Patent Office. This is not a standard Spring Boot development role. You will lead a team working on a sophisticated, event-driven microservices architecture with deep integrations across modern and legacy systems.
As Technical Lead, you will be expected to quickly understand the complex domain and architecture, drive technical decisions, mentor team members, and ensure high-quality, timely delivery in a dynamic environment where requirements are still evolving.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of scalable, resilient microservices using modern Java technologies.
- Own the architecture and implementation of event-driven solutions using Kafka and Spring Cloud Stream.
- Drive technical direction, code quality, and best practices across the team.
- Collaborate closely with Business Analysts, Solution Architects, and other technical teams to clarify and refine requirements.
- Work hands-on with Kubernetes, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines to ensure smooth deployment and operations.
- Handle ambiguity proactively, identify risks early, and propose solutions in a fast-moving environment.
- Mentor and support mid/senior developers while maintaining strong personal productivity.

- Java 17+ (current stack runs on JDK 25 – deep knowledge required)
- Spring Boot 3+ (strong experience with the latest versions)
- Spring Cloud Stream + Kafka (extensive hands-on experience mandatory)

- PostgreSQL
- Docker & ArgoCD
- Experience with legacy systems (e.g., DB2)
Candidate Profile
- Significant experience in similar complex integration projects involving microservices, messaging systems, and Kubernetes.
- Strong leadership and ownership mindset — you take responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and comfort working with evolving or incomplete requirements.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills (English C1+).
- Previous experience in lead or senior technical roles.
What We Offer
- Fully Remote work
- Gross Salary: €2800 – 3300 as an employee (as a contractor/freelancer, the rate is daily)
