We are currently seeking a talented Technology Specialist on behalf of a major EU Agency.

Location: Malta, Valletta

Seniority: Senior (10 years of experience in the requested field)

Working model: hybrid, mostly remote (90% off-site, 10% on-site)

Estimated duration: 90 days (81 days off-site, 9 days on-site)

Education level: EQF level 5 (this is mandatory to be met, with available proof before the offer)

Salary range: freelancers with 250 – 280 euros daily rate

Job Profile

We are seeking an experienced Senior Technology Specialist with a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in database infrastructure, performance optimisation, and enterprise observability. The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and hybrid cloud database environments spanning Azure, AWS, and on-premises infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse existing Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and hybrid database architectures across Azure, AWS, and on-premises environments to assess performance, scalability, resilience, and operational maturity.
• Evaluate current database observability capabilities and identify opportunities to improve monitoring, alerting, diagnostics, and operational visibility.
• Configure, administer, and optimise enterprise database monitoring platforms, including SQL Sentry and related observability tools.
• Assess database performance baselines, resource utilisation trends, capacity requirements, and high availability/disaster recovery configurations.
• Recommend and implement AI-driven monitoring capabilities, anomaly detection techniques, predictive analytics, and automated self-healing mechanisms to improve database operations and minimise service disruptions.
• Troubleshoot complex database infrastructure and application performance issues, conducting root cause analysis and implementing sustainable corrective actions.
• Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, application development, and operations teams to optimise database performance and reliability across hybrid environments.

Required Qualifications

• Education level: EQF level 5 (this is mandatory to be met, with available proof before the offer)
• Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience managing enterprise database environments.
• Extensive experience with Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL administration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
• Strong experience supporting hybrid infrastructure environments, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and on-premises data centres.
• Proven experience configuring and administering SQL Sentry or comparable database monitoring and observability platforms.
• Strong understanding of database performance optimisation, indexing strategies, query tuning, execution plans, and capacity planning.
• Experience with high availability and disaster recovery technologies, including clustering, replication, backup, and recovery strategies.
• Demonstrated experience performing root cause analysis and resolving complex production database issues.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with AI-enabled observability platforms and AIOps solutions.
• Knowledge of automated remediation, infrastructure automation, and scripting using PowerShell, Python, or similar technologies.
• Experience with cloud-native database services and managed database platforms.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, and automation frameworks.
• Relevant Microsoft, AWS, Azure, SQL Server, or database-related professional certifications.
